In the spring of 2007
an ambitious new community activity will begin
as 4 The World’s USA volunteer’s
along with University of Southern California’s
Peace and Conflict Scholars (PACS) and the community
members from the town of Buena Vista, Belmopan,
San Ignacio, and Selena will begin volunteering
many weekends and days in tropical heat to build
classrooms and library for the school children
from a under developed, remote community in Central
Belize.
In the event of a natural disaster such
as a hurricane, the new buildings will serve
as a shelter. Medical staff and educators will
also use the facility to bring basic health care
education and vaccinations to village residents.
The community of Buena Vista has no electrical
power. We will be looking for a grant for wind
up computers for these students to gain knowledge
and experience in the use of computers.
Many of the students as well as parents and
friends are going to work many hard hours in
very hot conditions. Together the people of these
communities will demonstrate true teamwork and
admiration of the volunteer experience. When
completed this will be the only safe haven in
the event of a hurricane and will serve as the
community center for any community rebuilding
efforts.
